How to Care for Your Gold Vermeil Jewellery — The Complete Guide

At MOA, we design our jewellery to be worn every single day — with your morning coffee, at the office, on a night out, and yes, even while you sleep. Our gold vermeil pieces are built for real life, not just special occasions.

That said, like anything beautiful and well-made, a little love goes a long way. Follow these simple habits and your MOA pieces will stay as stunning as the day you first wore them.

What is Gold Vermeil? A Quick Reminder

Gold vermeil is sterling silver (925) with a thick layer of gold applied over it — at least 2.5 microns thick. This is what makes it significantly more durable than regular gold plating, which uses a much thinner layer over base metals like brass or copper.

Because the base is sterling silver and the gold layer is thicker, gold vermeil is designed to handle everyday wear beautifully — including sleeping in your favourite pieces.

Simple Habits That Make a Big Difference

1. Put It On Before Perfume and Moisturiser Dry Down

You don't need to change your routine — just give your perfume, moisturiser or sunscreen a minute to fully absorb into your skin before putting on your jewellery. The chemicals in these products can build up on the gold surface over time, so this one small step makes a real difference to how long your pieces keep their glow.

2. Rinse After Swimming

Our pieces are designed for everyday wear, but chlorine in pools and salt in the ocean are particularly harsh on any metal — gold vermeil included. If you've been swimming, a quick rinse under fresh water and a gentle pat dry is all it takes to keep your pieces in great condition.

3. Be Mindful of Hand Sanitiser

Hand sanitiser contains alcohol, which can affect the gold layer over time — especially on rings and bracelets. Either let the sanitiser dry fully on your hands before touching your jewellery, or slip your ring off momentarily. It takes seconds and makes a real difference.

4. Give It a Gentle Wipe After Wearing

After a long day, a quick wipe with a soft dry cloth removes any build-up of skin oils or residue. It takes five seconds and keeps your pieces looking freshly polished.

For a deeper clean every now and then:

  1. Mix a small amount of mild dish soap with lukewarm water
  2. Dip a soft cloth into the solution
  3. Gently clean the piece
  4. Rinse quickly under lukewarm water
  5. Pat completely dry with a soft cloth

Avoid:

  • Ultrasonic cleaners
  • Abrasive cloths or harsh chemical cleaners
  • Silver cleaning dips

5. Store It Simply

When you're not wearing your pieces, a soft pouch or lined jewellery box keeps them protected from scratches and humidity. The pouches your MOA pieces come in are perfect for this.

If you wear your pieces to sleep — which many of our customers do with their delicate studs and fine chains — just make sure they're not tangling with other pieces overnight.

6. Wear It — Often

The best thing you can do for your gold vermeil jewellery is simply wear it. Pieces that are loved and worn regularly actually maintain their condition better than pieces left sitting in a drawer. The natural warmth of your skin keeps them looking alive.

What to Do If Your Gold Vermeil Tarnishes

Even with regular wear and good habits, gold vermeil can show some natural patina over time — particularly on high-contact areas. This is completely normal and part of the story of a well-loved piece.

Light tarnish: A gentle wipe with a soft cloth and mild soap solution (as above) will usually restore the shine beautifully.

Heavier tarnish: A jewellery polishing cloth designed for gold can help. Use gentle, circular motions.

If in doubt: Bring your piece into our North Sydney store and we'll help restore it to its best.
