Gold Vermeil vs Gold Plated vs Solid Gold — What's the Difference?

If you've ever shopped for gold jewellery online, you've probably come across terms like gold vermeil, gold plated, and solid gold — sometimes all on the same page. It can be confusing, especially when the prices vary so wildly.

At MOA Museum of Accessories, we get asked about this almost every day in our North Sydney boutique. So we've put together this simple, honest guide to help you understand exactly what you're buying — and what's actually worth your money.

What is Solid Gold?

Solid gold is exactly what it sounds like — jewellery made entirely from gold throughout. It comes in different purities measured in karats:

  • 24K — 99.9% pure gold. Very soft and not ideal for everyday jewellery.
  • 18K — 75% gold. The sweet spot for fine jewellery. Luxurious, durable and long-lasting.
  • 9K — 37.5% gold. The most affordable solid gold option and the most common in Australia.

Pros: Lasts a lifetime. Never tarnishes. Can be resized and repaired. Cons: The most expensive option by far.

Best for: Investment pieces, engagement rings, heirloom jewellery.

What is Gold Vermeil?

Gold vermeil (pronounced ver-may) is a specific type of gold-plated jewellery with two key requirements:

  1. The base metal must be sterling silver (925)
  2. The gold layer must be at least 2.5 microns thick

This is what sets vermeil apart from regular gold plating — it's thicker, higher quality, and built on a precious metal base rather than a cheap alloy.

At MOA, most of our gold jewellery is crafted in gold vermeil — which is why our pieces have that rich, warm tone and hold up so beautifully with everyday wear.

Pros: Affordable luxury. Beautiful finish. Safe for sensitive skin. Lasts significantly longer than standard gold plating. Cons: Will eventually show wear with heavy daily use — but proper care extends the life enormously.

Best for: Everyday jewellery, stacking pieces, accessories you want to look and feel luxurious without the solid gold price tag.

What is Gold Plated?

Gold plated jewellery has a thin layer of gold applied over a base metal — usually brass, copper or zinc. The gold layer is typically very thin (less than 0.5 microns), which means it can wear off relatively quickly, especially with daily contact with skin, water and perfume.

This is what most fast-fashion jewellery is made from. It's affordable, but the trade-off is longevity.

Pros: Very affordable. Looks great initially. Cons: Tarnishes and fades faster. Base metal can cause skin reactions. Difficult to restore once worn.

Best for: Trend pieces you'll wear occasionally, not every day.

How to Care for Gold Vermeil Jewellery

To get the longest life out of your gold vermeil pieces, follow these simple rules:

  • Remove before swimming, showering or exercising — water and chlorine are the biggest enemies
  • Apply perfume and body lotion before putting on jewellery — not after
  • Store in a soft pouch or jewellery box — away from other pieces that can scratch
  • Clean gently with a soft dry cloth after wearing
  • Avoid hand sanitiser — the alcohol degrades the gold layer over time

With the right care, quality gold vermeil jewellery can look beautiful for many years.

So Which Should You Choose?

Here's our honest recommendation:

  • If you want jewellery to last forever and pass down → invest in solid gold
  • If you want beautiful, everyday jewellery that feels luxurious without the price tag → gold vermeil is your answer
  • If you want something fun and trendy for occasional wear → gold plated works fine

At MOA, we've curated our collection around gold vermeil because we believe you shouldn't have to choose between quality and affordability. Our pieces are designed to be worn, loved and kept — not replaced every season.
